Orgasol® - FAQ

  •  How does Orgasol® improve abrasion resistance?

Orgasol® has a spherical particle shape, which prevents abrasive materials from wearing the surface of coatings and varnishes. Additionally, polyamides have a low coefficient of friction and are well known for their abrasion resistance.

  •  How does Orgasol® reduce gloss?

Orgasol® powder can be used as a flattening or matting agent when added to formulations. The presence of Orgasol® Powders near the surface will create a light deflection. The gloss reduction is dependent on the ratio of the Average Particle Size (APS) of Orgasol® Powdersto the dry thickness of the coatings, and also the concentration Orgasol® Powders into the formulation.

  •  Can Orgasol® be incorporated into glossy finishes?

Absolutely. Orgasol® is compatible with glossy finishes when a small percentage is added to formulations.

  •  Is it possible to reach very low gloss with Orgasol®?

Yes. Orgasol® combined with silica produces very low gloss (<10).

  •  Can Orgasol® be used to create a texturing effect?

Yes. The “Average Particle Size (APS) of Orgasol® Powders/dry thickness” ratio, along with the concentrion of Orgasol® Powders in the formulation will determine the textured effect. When the coating thickness is smaller than the powder APS, the larger particles produce a bumpy surface and the surface roughness increases. The tight particle size distribution ensures uniformity and consistency of the textured effect.

  •  What is the impact of Orgasol® on formulation stability?

Orgasol® has a good impact on formulation stability. Unlike PTFE powder, the low density of Orgasol® prevents it from settling out of the mixture.

  •  Can Orgasol® be used in UV or EB formulations?

Orgasol® powder can be used in any kind of formulation such as water-based, solvent-borne, 100% solid UV or EB curable systems. In 100% solid UV curable formulations, Orgasol® powder does not impact the viscosity of the formulation while providing low gloss and abrasion resistance.

  •  What resins can be used with Orgasol®?

There is no limitation. Orgasol® Powders are currently used as additives in a wide variety of resins or binders such as alkyds, polyester, polyurethane, acrylic and epoxy. Orgasol® Powders are beneficial in all formulations (water-based, solvent-borne, 100% solid UV or EB curable). However, the best results have been obtained with urethane-based coatings.

  •  Can Orgasol® be easiliy dispersed in water-based applications?

Orgasol® Powders may be easily dispersed into water with different kind of wetting agents. If your current water-based system already includes wetting agents, simply pre-disperse the Orgasol®. If you are using a co-solvent in your water borne system, pre-disperse the Orgasol® Powders in the co-solvent and then introduce it into the water-based system.

  •  Can Orgasol® be incorporated into solvent-based applications?

Orgasol® Powders have excellent chemical resistance, making them compatible with most solvent systems. Simply add the Orgasol® Powders at the end of the mixing phase, allowing enough time for the solvent to wet the Orgasol® Powders.

  •  Does Orgasol® improve anti-slip properties in flooring as well as improve cleanability?

Yes. Orgasol® is often used for that purpose in sport and industrial floorings. By using a large particle size compared to the coating thickness, a rough texture can be obtained to produce anti-slip and easy-to-clean properties.

  •  Can Orgasol® improve scuff resistance on low gloss surfaces?

Yes. Adding Orgasol® Powders significantly improves resistance, especially when the Average Particle Size (APS) of Orgasol® Powders is greater than the film thickness. The larger the APS of the polyamide powder, the more difficult it is to mark the coating surface with a rubber heel and easier it is to clean with a sponge.

  •  How is film clarity affected by the addition of Orgasol® to clear surfaces?

The effect on film clarity of clear surfaces depends on the choice of Orgasol® Powders used and amount used. Adding up to 15% of Orgasaol®  does not change the clarity of the clear surface.

  •  Can Orgasol® be used to control the coefficient of friction between two surfaces?

Orgasol® Powders have a low coefficient of friction and can be used to lower the coefficient of friction between two surfaces. Orgasol® improves anti-blocking properties. For example, when added to a polyurethane varnish gasket, it can minimize the coefficient of friction of rubber between rubber and glass, such as between car windows and rubber window seals.
